Elizabeth Odenbaugh Appold

Could she be a relative of our ancestor?

Elizabeth Odenbaugh APPOLD is listed in DAR books. She was one of several wives of a Revolutionary War Soldier. Unfortunately the application was from a descendent of another wife.

APPOLD, ANDREW.  Born c1755 in Berks or York County, Pennsylvania.  Died on October 31, 1818 in Baltimore, Maryland.  Married Elizabeth ODENBAUGH on December 29, 1779.  Served in Baltimore County Militia.  Their children:  Anna Maria, born c1784; Catherine, born 1789; George, born 1791; Deitrick, born 1793; and Elizabeth, born 1795.  (XXX-124)*

Charles Odenbaugh m. Martha Dean, Baltimore County licenses June 28, 1785 (Jonas' son... .but since their son was still in Baltimore County (where they might have had their child before Martha died in 1795) it is possibly this "Elizabeth ?" lived close by?

"I know further, that he died prior to April 14,1768 leaving no relatives in this country other than a minor child, Charles who attained his majority in 1780" written in 1888 in Thomas Hughes' My Family Memoirs (over 100 years later by descendents in PA....might not have known about Elizabeth.....assuming she is related."

"Elizabeth (ODENBAUGH) Arnold" could also be related to the "Mary Ann (ODENBAUGH) RHODES born in 1802 and died 6 November 1866. I haven't had the opportunity to check "My Family Memoirs" which should include this marriage IF this "Mary Ann Odenbaugh" is the widow of Thomas Hughes who was b. 1796-1862, buried in Wheeling W. VA....this differs from the dates for the other?

DAR Directories list: APPOLD, Andrew:  b. c. 1755 PA, d. 10-31-1818 MD, m. (1) Elizabeth Odenbaugh, (2) Nelly Decker, (3) Margaret Hubbard.  Soldier, MD.

This means that someone applied to the DAR using Andrew's service as her Patriot requirement; her application is still on file at DAR Headquarters.

Per phone call to DAR: Applicant listed Elizabeth's last name as ODENBAUGH, official Maryland records listed ODENBACH (this is how the English spelled and pronounced ODENBAUGH)

Elizabeth ODENBAUGH b. 1755 married in 1783 to Johan Andreas "Andrew" APPOLD b. 1752-1755, York County, PA; he died "intestate" on 10-31-1818. Per Tacy CAMPBELL's Dar application all his children had died before 1818. Tacy CAMPBELL also applied for another ancestor, Thomas McKENZIE. Johan Andreas "Andrew" APPOLD was the son of Joseph and Margaret (LNU) APPOLD. Spelling variations on official documents included OPHOLD; a MD Marriage CD had ARNOLD-their children:

1) Catherine b. 1789
2) George b. 1791 (Tacy CAMPBELL/Dar Applicant's ancestor)
3) Dietrick b. 1793
4) Elizabeth b. 1795
5) Mary was confirmed in 1799 at the age of 14 1/2; I believe in Zion Lutheran Church.

Andrew? ARNOLD b. 1755 York Co, Pa. m. Elizabeth Odenbaugh Dec, l779, he served in Baltimore militia, d. 1816. (both 1779 & 1816 conflict with DAR info) Both Elizabeth Odenbaugh and Andrew ARNOLD are listed in FTM CD 133 for 1775-1783 Revolutionary Patriots of MD, DE....perhaps more info is available in this source-and they might have descendents in DAR/SAR. However, his last name is spelled APPOLD in DAR records!!! So we don't know what his last name really was yet. A Johann Peter APPOLD is listed in a passenger list of 1736.

Jonas' son Charles had two daughters, Mary (older) and Elizabeth. Possible clues for the names of female ancestors of Charles. Elizabeth ODENBAUGH also named her daughters Mary and Elizabeth.
